Ice skating with friends during a grad night celebration, Menlo School senior Kenny Diekroeger received the big news.
The Menlo shortstop was selected in the second round of the Major League Baseball entry draft by the Tampa Bay Rays.
Picked No. 78 overall by the defending American League champs, Diekroeger became the highest Menlo player drafted in school history.
Graduating earlier in the day, the news caught the talented shortstop a little off guard.
With the sand in the hourglass quickly running out on a storied career, longtime Serra High-San Mateo head baseball coach Pete Jensen didn't particularly care how his club did it, he just wanted to end up in the winner's circle one last time.
"I was hoping for a wild pitch," Jensen said with a grin.
